Education
Free education classes are available so that people can learn about the disease affecting them or a family memmber and about the resources available for treatment, housing, and financial aid. Education and outreach help to inform the general public about severe and persistent brain disorders to help reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and to build understanding.
Advocacy
As people experience firsthand the difficulties of living with serious and persistent brain disorders, they need opportunities to advocate for change such as improved services, great access to treatment, housing, employment, insurance parity, etc. As an advocacy organization, NAMI tracks and keeps members informed about important political and social issues affecting people with mental illnesses and their families.
