History of NAMI-Central Georgia
- 1985 - The Family Support Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Inc., was organized and chartered in the State of Georgia
as a nonprofit organization
- May 1986
- The founders leased seven and one-half acres of land with a church building, located at 100 Story Road, from the Houston County Commissioners.
- The land was purchased in 1992.
- January 1989 - Renovation of the church building into a Group Home, New Hope Community Care and Training Center, was completed and has been fully operational since this time.
- November 1991 - The first of six planned duplex apartments was completed and occupied. The apartments are located adjacent to the New Hope Center.
- 1992 - New Hope Enterprises was established offering these Rehabilitation Services:
- Vocational Testing and Evaluation;
- Supported Employment, Work Adjustment; and
- Job Placement.
- 1995 - a greenhouse was completed, and Plantasia Gardens was dedicated to provide additional work adjustment, training and employment.
- 1996 - a workshop/office building at the NAMI location was completed.
- 1997 - a new, expanded greenhouse was built to keep pace with the increased production of our horticultural staff.
- 1999
- A second greenhouse was built.
- NAMI-sponsored Family-to-Family classes were begun.
- A computer training center was established with classes in introductory computer technology, office training and computer keyboarding.
- 2000 - our name was changed from the Family Support Alliance for the Mentally Ill to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill - Central Georgia in order to integrate our local organization with the national organization.
- 2001 - A shade house was added to the Gardens.
- 2002 - A well at the gardens became operational.
- 2006 - A butterfly garden was established at Seeds of Hope Garden (formerly Plantasia Gardens).
