What We Do

Currently, NAMI Central Georgia is made up of families, consumers, mental health professionals, and concerned citizens who strive to improve the quality of life for people struggling with a mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, obsessive-complusive disorder, and anxiety disorders. We do this in five ways:

  1. Support - NAMI Central Georgia is the local affiliate of NAMI Georgia and NAMI where families and consumers come together to support each other, share resources and make new friends. The state and national toll-free help line is advertised all over Georgia and is available for anyone who has questions or needs help finding services or support for mental illness.
  2. Education - We work to increase public awareness of mental illnesses as biologically based brain disorders and eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. We strive to increase awareness of the fact that mental illnesses are like all other chronic medical conditions in that with proper treatment and services, consumers can live full and productive lives. Additionally, the NAMI Family to Family classes have spread through Georgia, bringing hope and understanding to families with mental illness. The classes are free and are facilitated by trained family members. We hope soon to be able to import Peer to Peer training to the central Georgia area which is taught by trained consumers and is designed to help consumers manage their illnesses and give support and understanding to consumers. We are working with the State office, GBI, DHR and veteran's organizations to spread Crisis Intervention Training throughout Georgia to train law enforcement professionals how to deal with consumers in crisis, how to stabilize volatile situations, calm the person and get them into treatment in lieu of, often, the only option available to them-jail.
  3. Advocacy - NAMI Central Georgia is proud to be an active part of national, state and local legislative issues that have to do with mental health services. Our advocacy efforts include initiating laws that will guarantee insurance parity with other illnesses, increased funding and better services the funding and hiring of an ombudsman which was designated through efforts initiated by NAMI to improve accountability and oversight of the public mental health services provided for mental health, developmental disabilities, and addictive disease consumers. Until Georgia has improved funding for evidence based community services, fully implemented the Supreme Court decision known as the Olmstead act, adequately funded hospital services and stopped punishing the consumers for being sick instead of providing treatment just as they would for any other illness, our legislative advocacy work is critical.
  4. Research - Our families and consumers participate in genetic and medication studies around the nation to further research into better treatment and a cure for brain disorders.
  5. Direct Services - We provide residential services and support groups for consumers. These services are provided on a sliding fee basis and are funded through contracts and grants, fundraising and donations.
